The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) today announced the appointment of Steven Schoenfeld to serve as director of the Division of Market Oversight.
Schoenfeld comes to the CFTC from Global Index Strategies, a consulting firm that specializes in benchmarks and financial product development, where he served as President.
“I am pleased that Steven will be joining our team and I look forward to working closely with him to modernize regulatory oversight of our critical markets,” said CFTC chairman Gary Gensler. “Steven brings a depth and breadth of industry knowledge that will be invaluable to the CFTC as we fulfill our mission to protect the American people by lowering risk, promoting transparency and protecting market integrity.”
Before assuming the Presidency of Global Index Strategies, Schoenfeld held numerous positions in the financial industry, including Chief Investment Officer of Global Quantitative Management at Northern Trust, Managing Director at Barclays Global Investors, Investment Officer at the International Finance Corporation/World Bank and a futures trader at the Singapore Exchange. In the course of his career Schoenfeld has worked with futures and stock exchanges worldwide, including Tokyo, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Tele Aviv, Bangkok and Budapest.
Schoenfeld has authored or edited numerous articles, book chapters and books on global investment, emerging markets and index benchmarks. He received his B.A. in History and Government from Clark University in 1984, was a Fulbright Scholar in Economics at the National University of Singapore from1985-86, and received an M.A. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1992. He will be moving to Washington from New York.
