Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis
Members of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis (CRIS) will travel to Washington and New York next week, from 7 to 11 June, to discuss potential transatlantic cooperation in the crisis.
The ten-strong delegation, led by committee chair Wolf Klinz (ALDE, DE), wants to learn about U.S. measures for dealing with the crisis, stimulating the real economy and boosting employment. It also aims to see how far the two sides share the same outlook and to compare different proposals for tackling the crisis.
In Washington, the committee members will meet Congress and U.S. Administration policymakers as well as IMF, SEC and World Bank representatives. In New York they will discuss the crisis with industry representatives (Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, SIFMA, hedge fund managers) and senior academics at Columbia University.
The European Parliament’s CRIS committee was set up in October 2009 with a one-year term of office, which may be extended until 2011. Its mandate is to assess the extent and impact of the crisis and make practical recommendations. The recommendations will be included in a mid-term report to be put to the vote in the CRIS committee in July and then in Parliament’s plenary session in September 2010.
